Jon Platz, 41 of Olathe shot a 36-hole total of 145
to win the Kansas City Masters by three shots over Don Walsworth.
Platz started the day with a two shot lead over Tyler Shelton and
four shots over Walsworth. However, after a bogey, double bogey
start, Platz’s lead was virtually gone. Platz quickly recovered
with a birdie on the 172 yard par 3 No. 3 and never looked back.
Walsworth, 44 of Leawood played perhaps the most consistent
of any player made a run at Platz, but finished with back to back
bogies.
Jimmy Gates 31, of Overland Park posted the low round of the day
with an even par 72 which allowed him to move up into a tie for
third place with Tyler Shelton. Gate’s finish earned him enough
points to move him into the top 20 of the Bushnell Amateur Standings
and secure a position in the upcoming Watson Challenge. Kris Casburn,
34 of Blue Springs finish (5th place) also earned enough points
to move into the top 20.
Championship Notes
Tyler Shelton made an eagle on the 542 yard par 5 No. 8 when
he holed out 90 yard shot from the fairway.
Luke Johnson made an eagle on the 522 yard par 5 No. 17 when
he chipped in from an awkward lie against a tree.
Defending Championship, Jay Hepler finished tied for 12th
Hole No. 9 was the hardest hole with a stroke average of 4.516
